Festive 50 2013

There are only 32 of 2013’s Festive 50 available on Spotify and the number one is missing!

That was Two Bridges by The Wedding Present and it’s hardly surprising that it’s not on Spotify as it was only available on 7″ vinyl (with the ol’ download code!) at gigs during the bands’s Hit Parade 21st Anniversary Tour.

Here is the full run down of the 2013 Festive 50.

And here is the playlist (32/50). i will try and source the missing tracks over the next couple of weeks. But highlights here include the likes of Mogwai, The Fall, Colour Me Wednesday, Joanna Gruesome, The Spook School and Public Service Broadcasting.

Oasis are now on Spotify. Their début album Definitely Maybe (1994) was a breath of fresh air at the time but they soon became a parody act. They never made the Festive 50 but one of their songs did. Wonderwall was covered by Cat Power in a session for Peel and it made number 33 in the 2000 Festive 50.

Festive Fifty Build Up Show – 2013/12

As previously mentioned the Festive Fifty is currently streaming on Dandelion radio.

The station also ran a Festive Fifty build-up show and they have posted a copy of this to Mixcloud for streaming. They say (or said?) “Join a selection of Dandelion Radio DJs for the hour up to midnight (GMT) on Christmas Eve for this one-off, Festive Fifty Build-Up show. They’ll be introducing some of their picks of 2013 that didn’t quite make it into this year’s legendary listeners’ poll, while warming up for the first play of 2013’s results starting at midnight.

So if you missed it tune in!

The schedule for the Festive Fifty show can be found here.

Punk Special 10/12/1976

Peel’s broadcast on 10 December 1976 is now known as the Punk Special Show. I have replicated it the best I can as versions of all the tracks are on Spotify. However this was The Damned’s first ever session for Peel (recorded 30/11/76) and only one of the actual session tracks is on Spotify. I have taken the others from their début album Damned Damned Damned. However some kind soul has uploaded the full session to YouTube so you can grab a listen there.

More on the show can be found at The John Peel Wiki. And here is the transcript of the show.

Led Zeppelin on Spotify

Led Zeppelin have signed an exclusive deal with Spotify who now get to stream their back catalogue. Nope that news doesn’t excite me either but at least it means I can go one step further in completing the Festive Playlists for 1976, 1987, 1979 and 1980 which have been duly updated. This one appears in each of those years.

Movement – Peel Sessions 1977 – 1979

I haven’t come across this compilation before which was released as a 2 CD set at the end of 2011 by EMI. It compiles recordings by 41 different punk, post-punk, reggae and 2 Tone acts including Joy Division, XTC, The Jam, Simple Minds, The Specials, Public Image Ltd. and Siouxsie and the Banshees. It’s still available to buy from a certain tax avoiding website.
